The latest evidence – examined by the world’s leading expertsThe WHO’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding recommends artificial teats or pacifiers should not be given for breastfeeding infants. The use of a pacifier, a non-nutritive sucking device to calm an infant, is relatively widespread and has become a cultural norm in many parts of the world, and pacifiers are often believed to be harmless or even necessary and beneficial for infants’ development. However, the use of pacifiers for breastfeeding infants remains controversial. In a recent Cochrane Review, the Authors identified 3 studies, involving 1915 babies to investigate the effect of unrestricted use of pacifiers vs. the restricted use of pacifiers on breastfeeding. So, does the use of pacifiers affect the duration of breastfeeding? Read the latest edition of Cochrane Journal Club to find out.

If you take part in a regular journal club, or would simply like a greater understanding of an important Cochrane review, Cochrane Journal Club is the place to start.
